Preserving the Cane Corso’s characteristics is possible. I understood this by being present on the annual “Contado del Molise” Meeting which has been a great success. The numbers are clear: more than 120 people, 56 Corsos, Italian Pomeranians and Abruzzese Mastinos (for a total of 75 dogs). An amazing exemplar of South Italian Greyhound (brought by that fantastic man named Flavio Bruno) and a new (almost for me) exemplar of “Half-Corso”, that is, a cross between a Corso and a Mastino Abruzzese. Presenting such a wonderful animal, none but a peculiar man, Riziero Liberale; man of the old kind from the countryside, very elegant in his casual style: a gentleman of the old good times.
Doc. Andrea Mazzatenta, who had himself a wonderful Corso coming from the breed of Castell’Anselmo, property of Francesco Mostacci, one of the few breeders who agreed to the collect of DNA specimens for the analysis, (… is it maybe because all the others had something to hide..?) started – together with Doc. Alessandro Cellerino that, due to important professional business, couldn’t have been present depriving us, unfortunately, of another important source of “scientific knowledge” – a project of research that aims to reconstruct the huge genetic heritage of the Cane Corso. It’s a research developed with very hard criteria. Deeds not words! All the people, who agreed with lot of enthusiasm on the Project, asked, tried to be informed, they wanted to know. And they have participated with lot of interest on the final seminaries: the one of Doc Mazzatenta and, soon after, the one of Doc. Massimiliano Paoletti, young veterinary from Campobasso, who talked about hip and elbow’s dysplasia, answering to many practical questions. Particularly appreciated has been the unexpected presence (in private way) of Doc. Paolo Breber – an historical figure of Cane Corso’s world – that, on his greet, expressed appreciation for the “typical” dogs that were present (particularly for Gladio (Ciccio), an amazing exemplar of the Contado, grey brindled, “yellow” eyes and by the very typical head). A day of “pure cinophily”. Not the usual beauty contests, where frustration and greed prevail! In Città Sant’Angelo, everyone admired the dogs of the others, everyone asked, everyone was happy for the others. In a very funny mass – in the barking and in some soundly growl (about this, all the owners have been very able to avoid even the smallest sign of fuss although the massive presence of very very tough dogs), voices, questions, talkings and laughs – there was Flavio Bruno lavishing pieces of advice (he visited an old Irish Setter who just had a surgery), opinions and anecdotes. It’s impossible to hide it: it has been HIS big day, that repaid him of years of sacrifices, accuses, slanders and greed. He deserved it! Ivan Paone

It has been a big success the 2006 Contado del Molise Meeting, an annual appointment for those who recognize in the traditional cinophily of our country, an absolute cultural and biological inheritance because is the only, much more than any other manifestation, that is able to indissolubly link the forms to the aptitudes, theory to the practice, past to the future, the dog to the man This is what, once a year, makes a higher number of friends participate to the meeting: is rising the knowledge about the many and different meanings of “cinophily”. The meaning that the Contado del Molise privileges is the one that allows to reflect the history, that keep untouched the morphological and functional meaning of the breeds, meaning that has been inherited from an ancient past for a man-dog partnership that cannot be changed just because it is put into a socio-political context, the one of our days, that is much different from the one in which they were born. Finally “the dog” is the focus of our attention as cultural inheritance: the Cane Corso, the Mastino Abruzzese, the South Italian Greyhound, the Half-Corso, have represented in this day not their owners nor their breeders but only the history of our people to the most ancient of our Fathers and to the glorious and heavy facts of our country. The dignity could walk down on four legs, without the infamous and almost too frequent task to stand by the sumptuous vanity of men. The dogs’ looks took us into lost memories of wolves, bears and flocks, battles, farms, wonderful landscapes and far urban dimensions, when the dog was really the “family dog” when bread and cheese were common food for both dog and owner, when the dog was “happy because you seem today to have the will of living with him and not with the world over there…” (Excerpt from Cane e Padrone by Thomas Mann). Le facce dei molossi e ….. dei molossari di: Renzo Galassi
Quest’anno essendo presenti giornalisti professionisti, l’amico Flavio Bruno mi ha esentato dallo scrivere, come lo scorso anno, il rapporto della giornata dedicata al raduno dei Corsi tradizionali. È così che posso scrivere le semplici impressioni di ciò che ho visto e filtrato attraverso la mia mente. La cosa che mi ha maggiormente attratto, arrivando a Città Sant’Angelo (Pe) – Azienda Breda – il 7 ottobre scorso è stato il clima di distensione e di interesse intorno ad un patrimonio animale genetico così prezioso come quello dei cani presenti. Ho sentito una sorta di armonia regnante nei piccoli capannelli di persone ed animali che punteggiavano il perimetro della simpatica struttura agrituristica della collina pescarese. C’era l’ansia arrivando, di andare a salutare il “Motore” di questo enorme e “puro” carrozzone che è il Contado del Molise, Flavio Bruno, come per farsi riconoscere e testimoniare la propria presenza. Con ineguagliabile cordialità ed ospitalità, Flavio illustrava la struttura e le attività della giornata e poi, con gesto invitante della mano, incoraggiava ad inoltrarsi in quell’area gremita di esemplari canini ed umani, uniti da un atavico legame e da un amore reciproco ed appassionato. Dopo il primo giro fra i gruppetti di umanità varia, fra i tavoli dove si registravano le adesioni al progetto di ricerca sul Genoma delle razze italiane da lavoro, dopo aver abituato i timpani ai linguaggi canini che più o meno animatamente denotavano il tentativo di affermare le varie dominanze, sono rimasto attratto dalle facce di coloro che circolavano in giardino. Guardando intorno, gli occhi incrociavano occhi, e spesso erano occhi canini che, con un guizzo rapido cercavano di capire se era il caso di agitarsi o lasciar passare. Spesso gli occhi del cane si sollevavano e con fare interrogativo scrutavano quelli del padrone come a chiedere, “Bè, che faccio? Lo lascio andare?”. Negli sguardi reciproci si evidenziava affiatamento e comprensione di ogni parola non detta, il tutto gestito attraverso quella comunicazione non verbale che difficilmente funziona più che tra padrone e cane. Ho visto un signore anziano che camminava con un esemplare maestoso e mi sono fermato a guardare, perchè l’uomo esprimeva tratti di eleganza e signorilità propri di una caratteristica atavica, era alto e compassato e abbassando lo sguardo verso il suo bell’esemplare si notava lo stesso portamento. È evidente che esiste induzione dinamica comportamentale. Capita anche fra moglie e marito dopo molti anni di convivenza, i due arrivando avanti negli anni in armonia arrivano a somigliarsi, a riflettersi l’uno nell’altro e questo capita frequentemente fra padrone e cane. L’ambiente era cordiale. Con grande capacità comunicativa, i vari proprietari si assembravano a parlare e a condividere esperienze vissute con i loro potenti molossi, non c’era competitività nel loro volto, come se sapessero che i loro cani non dovevano a tutti i costi essere i migliori........; anche normali, i molossi di Flavio sono sempre animali superiori! Allora dove sta l’aspetto negativo? Ho cercato e qua e là ho incrociato un paio di facce che sembravano in cerca di qualcosa di “eccitante”. Conosco quelle facce, facce di gente poco sicura, insoddisfatta, che riversa sui propri figli a volte, o sui propri cani nella fattispecie, il desiderio di rivalsa e guarda caso avevano entrambe cani nervosi ma, ahimé, non sono stati accontentati, il clima troppo disteso e di taglio prettamente culturale e scientifico ha impedito l’auspicata canizza. Certo i molossi del Bruno mi stupiscono sempre di più. Devo ammettere che quando lui parla e cita il famoso equilibrio dei suoi Corsi, non mente. Questi bestioni che avrebbero la potenzialità di un bulldozer, in questa occasione hanno tenuto il portamento di tanti gentlemen, si sono guardati di traverso a volte, come a dire “se ci liberiamo e andiamo in un posto tranquillo ti mostro chi è il più forte”, però poi con lo sguardo mansueto ed ammiccante si volgevano ai padroni come per rassicurarli e confermare che si sarebbero ben comportati. Mi sono aggirato fra i convenuti per scrutare i volti dei “molossari” e devo ammettere che ho visto facce serene, attente ai contenuti delle conferenze tenute dagli esperti, cordiali, con grande carica di socievolezza e condivisione dei momenti di relax che la giornata a donato un po’ a tutti. Il pranzo ha raggruppato tutti davanti a ottimi piatti della tradizione culinaria locale ma, di tanto in tanto coglievo lo sguardo di qualcuno che, come preso da improvvisa crisi di astinenza, doveva uscire un attimo per controllare, salutare, carezzare o anche solo sbirciare da lontano il proprio molosso. Insomma, in ogni momento il legame fra “molossi e molossari” sembra essere simbiotico, e la mimica facciale lo dimostra. Attraverso i solchi che i muscoli facciali scavano nella cute del viso, corre un percorso che dai nostri giorni porta ai tempi degli antichi romani, un sentiero lungo il quale affiancati, legati, animati da reciproca ed indubbia stima, con amore inestinguibile, camminano l’Uomo ed il suo Animale.
